The story of Final Fantasy VII begins on a world known as Gaia. It is a planet that was once a paradise for life, but is now a wasteland destroyed by the destructive power of the sun and other celestial bodies.
The planet is divided between two major cities: Midgar on the west side, and Garund on the east. In the middle is a gigantic mountain, known as the Crystal Mountain.
In the world of Gaia, life still survives, but at a reduced rate. The population is made up of those who can rebuild their homes, and a few unique creatures.
One of these is the Makura, a type of life-form that can be found on the desert island of Makura. It is made up of water and dust, and resembles a pile of dirt. However, it can also transform into a small flying monster.
